LEICA 50mm 1.5 SUMMARIT - 1958. LEICA 50mm 1.5 SUMMARIT - M MOUNT - 1958 - EXCELLENT!

A fantastic example of this superfast Summarit for your delectation! This is a very rare lens. I'm a big fan of the Summarit 1.5, sought after for its class leading speed (It was the fastest lens in the world in 1950), it is a very special beast indeed.

This is one of those rare lenses which can make photography effortless, it looks simple, designed and built by studious Germans with sliderules and visors, you have to wonder how so many modern lenses can be such a faff by comparison. As with all Leica kit, this lovely thing feels as if it is hewn from solid rock. This rare M Mount example is amazingly, 60 years old, produced in 1958, which, put into perspective, was a year before Buddy Holly died. Yet it remains perfectly usable on either your Vintage or Digital Leica, or with the appropriate adapter, a modern digital body, such as a Panasonic G/GF/GH/GX series, Olympus PENs and OMDs, Samsung NX or Sony NEX body, it enjoys a particular following among users of the fantastic full frame Sony A7 and A9 bodies! The nickel/chrome finish is in excellent condition as you can see.

Barrel markings are present and enjoy even and stark contrast, while the focus ring is smooth and well damped and features the ubiquitous infinity lock, which functions perfectly. The aperture ring snaps happily into each detent, but as with all the best Leica lenses, can be set between stops for those who demand the greatest control.

The near perfect circular aperture for which this model is famous, is composed of a staggering 16 blinds and in operation it is as smooth as silk. Even the finish to the blinds, which is usually very well worn on lenses of this age, looks to have had a pretty easy life. As is common with lenses of this vintage, there is no sign of any fungus or oil at all. Optics are clear, with some cleaning marks.

There is no dust visible internally when holding the lens up to the daylight. There is a modicum of haze internally, but this has not effected my test shots, though I have obviously taken it into account in the asking price. The lens will be supplied as pictured, with caps and ready to get to work! So there you have it, a very rare and highly appointed, antique Leica lens, which as you can see is in stunning condition, and ready to stride majestically through another 60 odd years! Don't you just love photography?
