A VERY collectable lens this one, made for just 17 years, which in Leica terms is an instant. This particular example is amazingly, 61 years old, produced in 1957, but thanks to the availability of adapters, remains a perfect companion not just for your Vintage or modern day Leica, but also many modern digital cameras, such as a Panasonic G series, Olympus PENs and OMDs, Samsung NX or Sony NEX or even the fabulous full frame Sony A7 and A9. The 5cm/2,8 was an update to the venerable Elmar 5cm/3.5. Launched in 1956 and produced until 1974.

While it retains the classic collapsible design, the 2.8 is a much beefier lens and as with all Leica kit, feels hewn from solid rock. This particular example is a very early 1957 version in good used condition, in use everything operates smoothly. All the barrel markings are present and enjoy even and stark contrast. The focus ring turns easily, the aperture stops are indented, adjusting the incredible fifteen blinds which give this lens its incredible, nearly perfectly round, iris like aperture, enabling that wonderful, organic bokeh which Leica lenses are so renowned for.

The aperture is as smooth as silk, and there is no rust or oil on the blinds. Optics are good and are coated in a gorgeous deep blue, as is common with Leica lenses of this vintage, there is a little haze, but nothing which has had any effect on my test images and are coated in a gorgeous deep blue. As with all vintage Leica glass, this lens defies its years, it remains fully functional and is great fun to use. Most importantly, it produces great images and is almost viciously sharp, proving that for available light photography, there is still nothing to touch these beautiful 20th century Teutonic optics!

The lens is supplied as pictured, with caps and ready to go to work! So there you have it, an antique Leica lens, which as you can see is begging to get out and shoot, despite it's near pensionable status. Don't you just love photography?
