A gorgeous example of this classic Leica fast portrait lens! This is a gorgeous lens, which is always an exciting find. Exclusively made in Canada for just 13 years, from 1974-87, it is distinct from the 90mm 2.8 Elmarit as it is physically shorter than its focal length, Leica using the word'Tele (photo)' more precisely than the rest of us generally do to describe a 90mm lens which is just 60mm long, measured from the camera body. A much loved and VERY collectible lens, which is generally very hard to find, especially in as excellent condition as this one and which lends itself to many genres, either on your film or digital Leica, or a compatible digital body, such as my own Olympus PEN F (Micro Four Thirds), Fuji X, Sony NEX and the amazing full frame Sony A7 and A9 bodies as well as the new full frame mirrorless offerings from Nikon, Canon and Panasonic.
Informed by the serial number; 3293302, this is a 1983 model, so 36 years old, though you would never guess it! In common with the very best Leica equipment of this vintage, it defies the passage of time with a rare grace and everything operates as smoothly as silk and as with all Leica kit, this chunky little Elmarit feels as if hewn from solid rock, yet is the lightest and most compact of all Leica's 90mm lenses, it really is a masterpiece! The black anodized aluminum black finish is not damaged in any way, the finish is very near perfect. All the barrel markings are present and enjoy even and stark contrast and the red mounting dot is happily present.Optics are similarly excellent, That vast, wide open front optic bears no cleaning marks or abrasions at all, while that lovely blue coating is completely intact. There are just a few tiny motes of dust visible when held up to daylight. There is obviously no sign at all of any rust, oil or fungus. The focus ring turns easily with excellent damping and the aperture ring runs smoothly, dropping happily into detents set at each half stop, offering further control of the incredible ten blind aperture which give this lens its near circular aperture, enabling that wonderful, organic bokeh which make Leica images so unique. Despite its 36 year vintage, it remains fully functional and is great fun to use.
Most importantly, it produces great images! 90mm is nominally a Portrait lens, but you can just as easily use it as a compact Tele! So there you have it, a very rare and highly appointed, Leica lens, which as you can see is in excellent condition, despite it's antique status.Built in a way which is frankly beyond modern understanding, looked after reasonably well this lens will easily last another 36 years and being Leica, when you, your children or grandchildren come to sell it on, you will like as not achieve much more for it than you paid here.
